History Teacher (Grades 6-8)

We are actively seeking an experienced teacher for an opening within the Middle School in grades six through eight with a focus on history. This position includes teaching both world history and United States history. Candidates must have a strong understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of middle school students and a passion for working with this age group during a critical stage of development.

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • an ability to teach engaging and developmentally appropriate world and United States history curriculum;
  • an ability to help students think critically about historical events, perspectives, and sources;
  • an ability to connect historical content to present day issues and global citizenship;
  • an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues;
  • strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • an understanding of, appreciation for, and commitment to twenty first century learning skills;
  • an aptitude for and commitment to meaningful technology integration in the classroom;
  • the ability to create engaging learning experiences that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and student voice.

Experience with project based learning, Responsive Advisory, differentiated instruction, and student centered instructional practices is preferred. A master’s degree and prior middle school teaching experience are also desirable. Founded in 1938, SMCDS is an independent day school of 250 students serving children from toddler through grade eight, with class sizes ranging from around 10-16 students. The Location

The school’s well-appointed 7-acre campus overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is situated in historic Newport, Rhode Island, minutes from some of the most impressive beaches and coastal landscapes that New England has to offer. Newport and the beaches of Aquidneck Island are destination locations and teachers have the opportunity to integrate the geographic and cultural surroundings into their curricular programming. There are numerous universities and colleges close by, including, Salve Regina, University of Rhode Island, Brown, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence College and Roger Williams, adding to the cultural and intellectual climate of the area. Providence is a short drive (35 minutes), Boston is a bit more (1 hour and 30 minutes) and New York City (4 hours) is close enough for a weekend trip. This is a highly desirable place to live and work.
